As usual couldn’t resist

Leave it up to House to see it differently. I think his restatement is more true but doesn’t reflect all the meaning in the term ‘opiate’. IIRC, this is from Marx and presumably his meaning is the religion distracts the masses from understanding their exploitation by the rich, certainly a valid statement for the modern Repug party. But House’s statement captures the entirely fabulous (Paine’s sense) character of religion.

  1. For all intents and purposes, Thomas Paine is one of the reasons I do not believe in organized faith or religion today. I refuse to be society’s PLACEBO! I refuse to be politics PLACEBO!! I refuse to be used in any manner where I’d be someones ANYONE’S PLACEBO!!!

With all your BOLD did I hit a nerve? Again, tell me what you really think! 🙂

By Paine are you referring to Age of Reason? I liked that a lot until I got to all the slogging parts of the actual biblical contradictions (who cares if they had inconsistent counts of the tribes leaving Babylon? Yes, I know, it disputes inerrancy but it’s pretty boring reading.

  2. He AND other notable atheists; in fact I found this wonder little website of some very famous and remarkable people listed along with their accomplishments: Ckeck it out@
http://www.jmarkgilbert.com/atheists.html I’m certain that the Romney/Ryan campaign would be surprised to realized that Abraham Lincoln himself was an atheist. How about that!!!
