Apple’s bonehead move

I think it’s an amusing irony how Apple has become what it once denounced. In the early days of the Mac, when Apple ran the single instance of the 1984 ad (too powerful), but then did repeatedly run the lemmings ads, showing three-piece suit types badly marching off a cliff to buy PCs because they were too bullied to consider anything else. So today people run ads of people standing in lines to buy whatever “new” gadget Apple has and other people walk by showing the phones they have from someone else that already provide what Apple is claiming as new. In short, all the Apple buyers are so caught up in the fad and having to have the trendy Apple toy as a status symbol, it’s easy to make fun of them. That kind of arrogance almost killed Apple before (rescued from the dead by Bill Gates, I was there when Jobs showed Gates on video talking about the equity investment in Apple and the crowd was booing) and I forecast it will kill them again.

So Apple is so convinced its customers will buy anything with an Apple logo (or that they can get the courts to bully all their competition) it can do stupid stuff like this and know it can get away with it. This simple article explains an incredibly stupid mistake they just made with iOS6. How can this possibly get through QA – a new release that kills WiFi on every iOS device! It’s not that someone deleted the webpage that is stupid, it is that a software release is totally dependent on having a particular webpage available or else the device doesn’t work – this is insane. As a software architect I would never have let something like this be done with any of my products. Whatever junior engineer made this horrible mistake should be fired (actually the whole department for letting it happen); and any reasonable company would have prevented this from being released. And now that it’s been done Apple should be apologizing, fixing it instantly, and paying some sort of compensation.

But Apple thinks its devices are a fashion statement and their lemming customers will buy whatever crap they produce. The iPhone5 is a big whoop disappointment, yet Apple will be laughing all the way to the bank (and record stock prices) because its customers will forgive ridiculous mistakes. But one of these days the courts will decide it’s not their job to grant Apple a near monopoly and someday sanity will prevail. And sanity will prevail and Apple will be back in the dumps again for its arrogance.
