The Okinawa Diet May Be The Key To Longevity And Help You Live To 100-Years-Old

Yet another diet claim based on people who live (mostly) in a non-technological low-stress slow-paced world (IOW, maybe diet has absolutely nothing to do with their longevity). These keep coming and coming and, of course, prove absolutely nothing. Why? Because this isn’t a study: a) there is no control group (i.e. Okinawans eatings tons of burgers), b) there is no baseline (what are the genetics of these people), c) there is a no test group (people, say from Mississippi) that eats the same diet. IOW, once again, this isn’t science.

But even supposing this is somehow true. Eat that fish, avoid that red meat, eat those vegis, including those weirdo Asian ones. Now you’re going to live past 100.

Is that really what you want?

Do you have enough savings and investment to pay for 20 more years of life, especially ones where your physical activity will be reduced and you’ll need extra caretaking. Do you really think Medicare and Social Security won’t be either broke or destroyed by the Repugs by then and you’ll be 100 and homeless and starving and in pain? Do you have enough offspring, dedicated to aging parents, to provide any comfort to you while they are struggling to survive in a world without jobs for the 99%?

Oh yeah, just what I want. Another 20 years of life in 2040.

And what about global climate change. It will be fully upon us by then, the Arctic ice gone, glaciers gone, sea level up a couple of inches. You like this heat wave this summer – guess what, that’s just a teaser for what’s to come. Texas will break the Death Valley temperature records by 2050. Oh, by the way, oil will be running out and gasoline will probably be $25/gallon and milk will be $10/gallon and fruit will be non-existent since all the honeybees will be extinct.

Before we start worrying about increasing our own life expectancy and thus drastically increasing our already excess population, we’d better start worrying about the environment we’ll have to live in and the economics (like let’s finally do something about that 1%). Living to 100 means spending as many years in retirement as people spend working, think about it, half your adult life with no income, you really think that will fly. And then let’s assume you work, now the unemployment problem for your kids will be even worse because you’re holding onto your job and not letting some young person get it.

Our society cannot withstand the majority of the old farts living 20 more years than they do now. In fact, ask the Repugs, they’d be happier if we old farts were dying sooner than we are, which is why they want to help that along with their love of pollution and unsafe food and transportation (they’re pro-life for a glob of cells, but not very pro-life for actual living people who need resources, esp. older ones who need a lot).

So really sit down and ask yourself which you would rather have: a) a long impoverished and painful life, or, b) a completely unexpected and instant death. I’ll take b, thank you.
